Description

By late 1962 the success of the S Series Continental Bentleys entered its third and final chapter, with the introduction of the S3 Continental. The major cosmetic change was the introduction of the twin headlight system, providing Bentley drivers with more illumination. Mechanically speaking the S3 Continental was very similar to the S2 Continental, but benefited from having larger carburettors fitted and an upgraded power steering system. The success of the Vilhelm Koren designed Bentley S2 Continental had pleased the powers that be at Park Ward and his design was adapted for the S3 Continental chassis, with the introduction of twin headlights. The coachwork did not lend itself happily to horizontal headlights so they were instead positioned on a slight slant, a design that has commonly become known as the Chinese Eye. Chassis No BC100XE which we are currently offering for sale is one of fifty eight cars built in right hand drive to Design No 2006 by Mulliner/Park Ward on the S3 Continental chassis. It was originally completed in December of 1965. Supplied by Jack Barclay Ltd through their west London showroom to its first owner, Mr John Osborne of Chester Square in London. Being a late production example, it benefits from having the slightly lipped wheel arches and chrome strips on the coachwork, giving it arguably a more attractive appearance than the earlier cars. During the 1980’s the car was exported to the United States and in around 2012 it was restored to its striking current configuration, in Balmoral green with a tan hood and a fawn leather interior and matching hood cover. It was supplied in 2014 to its present owner and formed part of a small collection of high quality cars. It comes fully serviced, prepared and tested by Frank Dale & Stepsons and is complete with copy chassis cards and tools. This model continues to become more popular each year and we consider this fine example to not only be a very usable and beautiful classic Bentley, but also one that may benefit from future appreciation in value. Ready to enjoy.
